Post-Summer Recovery Season (Back to Routine Vibes)

It’s the end of summer. For some the end of summer causes sadness, it’s the end of vacations with sand and beaches, small town fairs and concerts. For others, it’s excitement for the fall and the beginning of the rush of the holidays.

For aestheticians and spa owners like myself, it starts the busy season of helping my clients transition, repair and reset. I humbly offer my clients the following advice, because good health always starts inside out.

Regulate Circadian Rhythm

Warmer nights can disrupt our sleep and deplete energy. Heat prevents our core body temperature from dropping, and for most of us, the best temperature for sleep is between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. As you prepare to fall asleep, heat is drawn away from your body’s core, allowing your body temperature to drop.  During REM, your body loses its ability to regulate its own temperature, making you highly sensitive to a warm room and causing you to wake up frequently.

In addition, prolonged daylight can further have us feeling like we are not getting enough rest. The extra daylight disrupts our circadian rhythm by halting the production of melatonin, the hormone that naturally signals to your brain that it is time to sleep.

The fastest way to reset and regulate your circadian rhythm is to combine immediate morning light exposure with evening darkness at consistent times, even weekends. When waking up, try to get in as much natural sunlight as you can. At evening, limit your blue light from smart phones and computer screens and use light blocking curtains. Most importantly, be mindful and use consistent time schedules when you can on times waking up and going to bed. Hunger and metabolism are closely linked to circadian rhythms so mindfulness with times you have your meals matter too.

Sun-Damaged Hair

Chlorine, saltwater, and constant sun exposure can leave hair brittle and depleted. Start with a fresh trim as snipping away frayed strands prevents the split from traveling up the hair shaft, which stops the hair from breaking off higher up. Trichorrhexis nodosa, or split ends is a common hair shaft disorder characterized by thickened, weak points (nodes) along the hair shaft that cause hair to fracture and break off easily. If you don’t want to lose any length, ask your hair stylist for a “dusting trim”. When heat styling, use the lightest setting possible on the hair dryer and use the flat iron less to help keep further damage from happening.

Bond-building treatments, Protein Treatments and Reconstructive Treatments (depending on your hair type, damage and haircare goals ) to repair broken proteins will assist in relinking broken disulfide and peptide bonds deep within the hair’s keratin structure. By reinforcing weakened internal bonds, the hair shaft becomes more flexible and resilient against daily brushing and future styling. These treatments can also reduce frizz. Deep conditioning masks use rich hydration ingredients to counteract the dryness caused by chlorine and saltwater is another great way to repair damage.

One good example of preventative would be haircare with UV filters. The Avalon Day Spa just added in this month Amika’s The Shield Anti-Humidity Hair Spray which has UV filters in the ingredients.

End of Summer Nutrition

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps buffer UV damage and neutralize oxidative stress. You can find this in Tomatoes and Watermelon.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids help restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier and reduce inflammation associated with sunburns. You can find these in Walnuts and Salmon.

Flavonoids and Vitamins help with free radicals that age and damage skin after sun exposure. You can find these in Blueberries.

Beta-Carotene (a precursor to Vitamin A) helps with supporting tissue repair and skin renewal. You can find these in Sweet Potatoes and Carrots.

Polyphenols help soothe inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. You can find this in Green Tea.

Vitamin E and C help collagen synthesis and repair damaged skin. You can find these in Almonds and Bell Peppers.

Sun Damaged Skin

Summer heat, chlorine and UV rays chip away at your moisture barrier and weaken your skin barrier. Your going to want to swap out your sheer or light moisturizers for heavier ones that are rich in ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

Skip harsh scrubs and instead use a silicone scrubbie with your cleanser or very gentle exfoliants like lactic acid cleansers 2-3 times a week to promote cellular turnover without stripping the skin.

For fading pigmentation, uneven skin tone and sunspots, target melanin production and stimulate collagen by using these ingredients:

Vitamin C: A brightening powerhouse that fades hyperpigmentation and neutralizes lingering free radicals.
Niacinamide: This multitasker calms inflammation and evens out tone.
Retinoids: Rebuild collagen and smooth fine lines caused by premature aging.

Professional Treatments

Inside of The Avalon Day Spa, my practice provides many options for professional treatments at low cost or discounted cost.

Lira Clinical Pro Lite Serum

The first thing I will prescribe for those with hyperpigmentation from sun damage is this 3 month supply serum. Hexylresorcinol breaks up stubborn pigment in the skin while Arbutin acts as a melanin suppressant. This works extremely well when used morning and night until product is completely used. I prescribe this for my clients with Melasma and it works well for them too.

Lira Clinical Pro Brite-Plus Serum

Depending on the severity, I may prescribe them this serum which is even more effective for stubborn pigment in skin. Featuring Tranexamic Acid which inhibits tyrosinase initiation in TRP1, reduces melanin distribution in keratinocytes and also the ingredient Ferulic Acid which prevent further hyperpigmentation and acts as an anti-inflammatory, skin brightener while protecting cells against UV damage.

Signature Corrective Facial $85.00 (60 Minutes)

For this service, I have 4 protocols I use depending on the skincare goals of the client. Not quite a full peel, but more than a facial, the protocols for this service give a customized hybrid facial using strictly utilizing Lira Clinical’s enzymes and peel solutions with age defying peptides, healing minerals, botanicals, plant stem cells, ancient mastiha, and natural lighteners and brighteners for the healthiest glow. Depending on goals- I will choose from :

Protocol 1 Actives- A blend of Vitamin C, Mandelic Acid, Pineapple and Papaya Enzymes to address dry and dehydrated skin, aging skin with fine lines and wrinkles and sun damage

Protocol 2 Actives- A blend of Mineral Retinol, Colloidal Silver and Gold to address sun damage, aging skin with fine lines and wrinkles, Acne Type I and II

Protocol 3 Actives- A blend of pumpkin enzymes, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Retinol to address dehydrated and dull skin, aging skin with fine lines and wrinkles

Protocol 4 Actives- A blend of Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid, Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid and Salicylic Acid to address hyperpigmentation, dehydrated skin, hormonally imbalanced skin

The reason why we do not offer full peels to new clients? These protocols are still very effective but clients do not have to prep for two weeks before the service with specific homecare products. All four of these protocols have healing ingredients like peptides, antioxidants, and botanicals that help heal, soothe and nourish at the same time we are introducing active ingredients to the skin. The results? Same day noticeable healthier skin with no down time, no peeling (just gentle sloughing of skin) and perfect reset for the next season. All four protocols include double cleanse, pH adjust, hydration treatment, serums, moisturizer, sun protection, lip and eye treatment in addition to the peel solutions.

Continue Sun Protection

Did you know that 80% of aging is from UVA and UVB rays? Yes, 80%! Only 20% of aging is from genetics, life style, food and water intake and more. Wearing sunscreen when you are outdoors should be a year round thing.

While you continue sun protection, your also helping your melanocytes from producing or slowing down the production of any more melanin in your skin, adding to further discoloration in skin tone. Bonus because zinc in mineral sunscreen will actually help your skin with things like anti-inflammatory benefits, calming redness, and is safe and gentle for those who suffer from eczema and rosacea. Another benefit to mineral sunscreen with zinc is it will not clog pores.
